Raising the Roofline: How Smart Design Transformed This Home Addition

When it comes to remodeling, it’s often the smallest details that make the biggest impact. For one Phoenix homeowner, it all came down to the roofline.

🎥 Watch the video: See how our team tackled the roofline challenge and transformed the look of this home.

She was ready to move forward with another contractor—deposit in hand—until we stepped in and showed her a different vision. One that didn’t just add square footage to her home, but actually made it look like that extra space was always meant to be there.

The Challenge: A Tricky Roofline and a Tempting Flat Roof

The project called for extending the living room by approximately five feet, which may sound simple, but the real complexity was in how the addition would affect the home’s roofline.

Other contractors had looked at the job and offered a quick fix: a flat roof. While functional, that kind of solution would’ve stood out (in the wrong way) and taken away from the overall curb appeal of the home.

A flat roof might have been faster and cheaper—but it wouldn’t have looked right.

Our Solution: Build It Like It Was Always There

We approached it differently.

Instead of forcing something onto the house, we designed a solution that complemented it. We extended the existing ridgeline just a couple of feet and then introduced a hip roof that tied seamlessly into the original structure. This roof system covered the addition—including the new bay window—and made the new space feel like it had always been part of the home.

This design didn’t just add space—it elevated the entire look of the house.

Why It Mattered

That attention to detail was the difference-maker. The homeowner was ready to go with another contractor until she saw how we could preserve her home’s character while still delivering the extra space she needed.

She chose us because we didn’t just tell her what to do, we listened to what she wanted.

FAQ

Why is the roofline important in a home addition?

The roofline plays a major role in how natural an addition looks. A well-designed roof helps the new space blend seamlessly with the original home instead of looking like an obvious add-on.

Are flat roofs common for home additions?

They can be, especially as a quicker or lower-cost option. However, flat roofs do not always match the style of the existing home and can affect overall curb appeal.

What is a hip roof?

A hip roof is a roof style where all sides slope downward toward the walls. It often creates a cleaner, more cohesive appearance when tying an addition into an existing roofline.

Will a home addition look original to the house?

That depends on the design approach. Thoughtful planning, matching rooflines, and proper integration can make an addition feel like it was always part of the home.

What should homeowners consider before building an addition?

Beyond square footage, homeowners should think about roof design, exterior appearance, flow between spaces, and how the addition will affect the overall character of the home.
