Remove Stickers From a Door Without the Mess
How to Remove Stubborn Stickers From a New Door
You bring home a new door, get ready to paint it, and find a sticker stuck to the edge. It looks like it should peel off in one piece. Instead, the paper tears and leaves a sticky mess behind.
Andrew Thruston from P. J. Hussey Construction runs into this on new slab and panel doors. Here’s the method he uses to remove the sticker and its adhesive residue.

What You’ll Need
- A flathead screwdriver
- A clean rag
- Mineral spirits
Step 1: Lift Off the Paper
Andrew uses the blunt edge of a flathead screwdriver rather than a utility knife. Holding it nearly flat against the door edge, he gently pushes and rolls the paper up, pulling away loose pieces as he goes.
Work slowly and avoid digging the screwdriver into the door. The goal is to remove as much of the paper as possible without gouging the surface.
Step 2: Wipe Away the Adhesive
Even after the paper is gone, the edge may still feel sticky. Andrew dampens a rag with mineral spirits and wipes the remaining adhesive from the door.
Before using mineral spirits, check the product label and test a small, inconspicuous spot, especially if the door already has a finish. Work with adequate ventilation and close the container when you’re done. Product guidance recommends testing cleaners on an inconspicuous area and using adequate ventilation with solvent-based products.
Step 3: Check the Surface Before Painting
Once the adhesive is gone, let the door dry and follow your paint or primer manufacturer’s surface-preparation directions. That quick check can save you from painting over a patch of sticker residue.
It’s a small part of installing a door, but anyone who has fought with one of these stickers knows how much time it can take. A little patience, a blunt edge, and a damp rag make the job much easier.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why won’t the sticker peel off my new door?
Some door labels tear as you pull them, leaving paper and adhesive behind. Removing the paper first makes it easier to clean up the sticky residue.
Can I use a utility knife to remove the sticker?
Andrew uses the blunt edge of a flathead screwdriver so he can gently roll the paper off. Whichever tool you use, keep it nearly flat and work carefully to avoid gouging the door.
Will mineral spirits remove the leftover adhesive?
That’s what Andrew uses in the video. Dampen a rag, wipe the residue, and test a small, inconspicuous area first especially if the door is already finished. Follow the product label and work with adequate ventilation.
Can I paint the door right after removing the sticker?
Make sure the adhesive is completely gone and the surface is dry. Then follow your primer or paint manufacturer’s preparation directions.
